Introduction

This course is designed to be run as stand-alone or Web-based training. You can run the course through Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) and Mozilla Firefox browsers. The course is also available at the DoD Information Assurance Support Environment Website and may be available in other learning management system installations.

For optimal use of a screen reader, it is recommended that the IE browser be used to access the course.

Each page in this course streams down completely before it begins. In the case of a slow network connection, download times for larger pages may be on the order of two minutes. A few pages contain smaller linked files that download upon selection, possibly introducing some lag time before play.

Web links in the resources section of the course were operational in March 2009.

If you do not have a web connection, some of the web pages will not display.

To help protect your security, your browser may restrict a file from showing active content. Should you receive a message stating this, select the area, and choose "Allow Blocked content...." Then choose 'Yes,' to run active content.

This course is written for the minimum system requirements, being Internet Explorer 6.0 and Mozilla Firefox 1.5. It is also written for the screen reading software Jaws version 8.0. If you would like to have the screen reader read the entire text per section rather than frame by frame, first select the Show Text option, and then select the Print Text link. The screen reader can then read the information, or you have the option to use the Save As feature under the File menu.

General Course Operating Instructions

1. If opening the course from a CD, place the CD into the CD-ROM drive. If you have a Macromedia Flash® 8 plugin installed, the course may be run by accessing the 'index.html,' or 'index' file through one of the specified browsers.

2. To install the Flash Player for the Mozilla Firefox browser, select the flashplayer8r42_win.exe installation program and follow the directions.

For the IE browser, select the file named flashplayer8r42_winax.exe in the root level directory and follow the directions.

NOTE: You will not see the .exe if you have file extensions turned off.

3. Parts of the course are formatted in HTML. If you use assistive technology, such as a screen reader, D-links provide descriptions of the graphics on that frame. Terminal screen content and some pages have large amounts of text that are directly available to accessibility technology in the content, and are not replicated in the D-Links. Alternative text, or Alt-tag, is provided for every image on the Web page.

4. The course provides "Show Text" panels that present the audio part of the course. The "Show Text" is also accessible through keyboard commands.

Flash Security Settings

Version eight and later of the Adobe Macromedia Flash Player plug-ins require a Global Security Setting. This setting is made to your system through an Internet connection, so that the Flash content of the course may be played through the CD-ROM drive. If the Global Security Settings are not made, the Web-based Training will not play when launched.

Select this link to view detailed information about the Flash Security Settings from Adobe/Macromedia or visit the Adobe Flash site for more information.

Keystroke Accessibility Notes

A large portion of the course is keyboard accessible. However, not all browser versions behave the same. In all browsers, the user must select the menu bar on the screen at least once in order for keypresses to function properly. The following are instructions and exceptions for some versions of Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

General:

The TAB key may be used to sequence through selections on these screens. Once you've tabbed to your selection, select the Enter key to execute the Key Access Codes.
Browser windows that the course opens, such as Glossary or Resources, can be closed by selecting Alt + F4.
If a mouse is available, users with impaired vision may "right click" on the course screen, and select the Flash "Zoom In" as required to magnify the screen. Selecting "Show All" returns to the normal sizing.

Keyboard Access codes:

Course menu items, or perpetual buttons, have certain letters underlined in the word. Accessing them via the key board are shown as follows in the table below.
- In Internet Explorer 6.0 (minimum system requirement), press Alt + the underlined letter + the Enter key.
- In Firefox 1.5 (minimum system requirement), press Alt + the underlined letter.
- In Firefox 2.0 or later, press Alt + Shift + the underlined letter.
When taking the course, if the keystroke control is not clear, refer to this README file for tips.

Network/Web Installation

1. To install the course on a network, place the highest level files in the network home or target directory. Copy the lower level directories to the same relative position in the file structure.

2. If you are operating with ActiveX disabled because of mobile code restrictions and want to run this course over a network, use Mozilla Firefox as your browser rather than Internet Explorer. Flash uses ActiveX when played on IE.
