<Txt frameNbr="1">DoD systems and networks are under constant threat by hackers, terrorists, criminals, and foreign nation-states. Protecting DoD information and information systems from threats, and limiting the damage when attacks are successful, are critical to national security. An intrusion detection system, or IDS, is an important tool to help you identify when a system or network is under attack. As an IDS analyst or administrator, you play a vital role in ensuring that IDSes are implemented effectively. Also, your judgment and skills are key in your ability to recognize malicious activity and take the steps necessary to limit risks and damage to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of DoD information and information systems. In this course, you will learn the fundamentals about intrusion detection systems. </Txt>

<Txt frameNbr="1">When you have completed this course, you will be able to define intrusion detection systems, or IDSes, and their purpose and use within the DoD. You also will be able to classify characteristics of IDS alerts into threat categories and differentiate true security incidents from false-positive events. You will be able to identify the correct placement of an IDS sensor in a typical DoD network configuration, and you will be able to explain advanced concepts in detecting security incidents using IDS technologies. There are seven lessons in this course, starting with this Course Introduction. Lesson 2, IDSes and the DoD, addresses the importance of having IDSes in the DoD, and Lesson 3, Networking Fundamentals, discusses networking concepts that are essential for understanding intrusion detection systems. Lesson 4, IDS Overview, presents IDS types and operations and discusses IDS events, examples, and shortcomings. Lesson 5, Implementing IDSes, introduces demilitarized zones, presents different methods of sniffing, and discusses IDS configuration issues. Finally, Lesson 6, Advanced Concepts in Incident Detection, presents sophisticated techniques involved in detecting security incidents using IDS technologies. The Course Conclusion reviews key points from each lesson and provides an opportunity for you to print a certificate of completion when you have completed the course. </Txt>
